Artists catalogue and paper samples
Tactile Paper was the first in a series of biennial books, and was produced in association with the Holland Paper Biennial of 1996. Originally, the idea was simply to put together an accompanying bi-lingual catalogue for this biennial. The number of introductory articles, however, reached such a volume that the final product, as well as being an exhibition catalogue, became a book about paper and contemporary paper art. The foreword is written by Henk Voorn, nestor of the Dutch Paper Historians.
The theme of the articles dealt with in Tactile Paper, is related to the actual paper samples encorporated into this edition. The 13 samples are, almost without exception, made from the material used by the artists taking part in the biennial to create their objects. The artists have also supplied us with a short piece of text about their work, together with a photo of the artwork.
The book consists, amongst other things, of articles about the Historical Paper Collection of the Royal Library in The Hague, and the research regarding the authenticity of Rembrandt's etchings with the aid of paper-dating. In addition to this, the articles explore special aspects of handmade paper, and there is a description of two Dutch papermills still in working order.

Paper, binding and printing
The edition is printed in full colour on different types of paper and bound according to the Japanese methods. Recognisable by the double pages and the hand-bound spine, to which all the pages have been stitched individually, making the binding work visible on the outside cover. The paper samples have in part been accommodated by punching out the upper layer of the double pages made possible by the Japanese binding.
