Artists catalogue and paper samples
Paper and Water is the third biennial book, associated with the Holland Paper Biennial of 2000. In this biennial the artists were divided into two groups: those who created two-dimensional pieces or objects, and a special group who dedicated themselves to the manufacture of paper jewellery. This is involved a total of 24 artists.

The articles in this bi-lingual edition are, however, related to one another by the theme of 'paper and water': the art of combining water and fibre to produce a fine sheet of paper. Two of the articles discuss the 'hollander', a machine whereby fibres can be ground to a pulp. One of the articles is about the age-old papermills in and around the Veluwe region, and another goes into detail about the watermarks and chain-lines in historical paper. Furthermore, there is an exclusive stock-taking article, which had never before been published, written by Peter Koeze from The Dutch Bank, about watermarks in all the banknote paper produced between 1814 and 2002. Finally, Paper and Water contains essays about Japanese waterdrop paper (sukimoyo), Japanese marbling patterns (suminigashi), and water-hyacinth paper.

The foreword is written by Arjan Kwakernaak, custodian of the Rijswijk Museum, where the biennial was been held for the third consecutive time. In an epilogue written by Henk Porck, the book is dedicated to Henk Voorn, who indefatigably researched the history of Dutch paper and who was responsible for putting together the impressive 'Paper Historical Collection 'of the Royal Library in The Hague.

In 2001, Paper and Water won an award for Best Dutch Book Designs and was exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Paper, binding and printing
The book consists of a special folder made of Neenah Columns Indigo/Recycled Bright White card containing 15 paper samples of the artists who also exhibited their work at the biennial. The folder is fitted into a flap sewn onto the front inside cover.

The book cover is made out of synthetic felt, which carries the wet paper through the roller section of the paper machine. The felt is singer-bound onto the inside cover of 324 gsm Neenah Columns duplex Epic Black/Safari, and the title is silk-sreened onto the felt.

The contents are full colour printed on specially manufactured paper, 100 gsm ivory watermark paper quality Desiderius, depicting a 'paper' mermaid.

Reproductions of marbled paper have been used as partition sheets between the sections and the essays, originally designed by Karli Frigge, Dieuwke Kollewijn and Eva van Breughel.
